Hussong Fashions Hot-Rod Horse by David Bonetti San Francisco Chronicle March 2, 2002 Randy Hussong at Paule Anglim
In his show of new work at Paule Anglim, Napa artist Randy Hussong
continues his exploration of Western culture, specifically customized cars
and horses, through the means of conceptual art. If that sounds unlikely, it
is: Hussong is pretty much the lone man in his field. His method and approach
to everyday culture might remind some of Terry Allen, however.
Hussong's ultimate goal is to produce a rodeo complete with customized horses and advertisements hawking biogenetics, the real subject of his investegations. A charming scale model of his rodeo is reminiscent of Alexander Calder's famous circus at the Whitney Museum in New York. The showstopper her is "Hercules," a life-size fibeglass horse painted bright red in metal-flake paint. "Hercules" is customized in the manner of a hot rod, with squat back legs, and he rotates slowly on a circular pedestal. Bring the kids. |
